Text and Image

What have you learned about Text & Image?

-Something that I've learned was that, when an artist is using Text and Image, they are trying to put more of a point across to the public who are looking at it. For example, in 2006 Banksy and Theirry Guetta went to Disneyland and hung up and inflatable figure wearing all orange, but a black top for the head. He snuck into a lite hidden area and set it up on a fence that faced a ride. He did this, so he could show or and provide social commentary on the War on Terror, and the mistreatment in Guantanamo. Now, that doesn't necessarily cover the text aspect, but sometimes you don't need to say anything to get your point across.

Another example that DOES use text and image, would be the art Barbara Kruger made. This picture is one that can go along the lines of today's society. Women all over the world are still trying to fight for their own rights. In Texas, the law that was made on women's abortion, the people there, (Mainly women), are having to fight as if their body IS a battleground. This piece of art was/is directed to the women of the world, and it is sad to see that even now, this painting is still true, and it was made June 30th, 1989.

How do contemporary artists use the concept of Text & Image in their artwork?

-Contemporary artists tend to use whatever they think best illustrates their idea in an appropriate manner. Now that there are more resources, artists are able to use photography, sculptures, film, new media, even live performance light, and sound/installation. In this picture, you see a metal sculpture. The artist decided to use their imagination in creating a project/metal tower that is reciting a poem or verse of some kind.

-Artists could also use the silent film topic, where there is no talking at all, but they include text to see what is being said. This helps in focusing on the scene before it cuts to a black screen with the text of what was being said on it, to help you in getting a better idea on what was being said.

How might you be able to use Text and Image in your own art?

- A way that I can use Text and Image in my art/films is, is by having a film where there is a customer walking around to different museums and art venues, trying to find the one that fits them the most. They could be a teacher trying to find something inspirational for their classrooms, or they could just be someone moving into a new home, and looking for classic/unique artwork.

Another example that I could use in my films is, I could have kind of a comedic film, if that's what we want to call it. Where there is a main character, and whatever they think, creates a little speech bubble beside their head that has what they are thinking, and as they look up at it, you can hear their inner thought speaking it. They could also have a back and forth conversation that would show the text changing as they go back and forth.

Is there something that you found in your investigation that specifically interested or inspired you?

-Being able to watch Banksy and Shepard Fairey sparked an interest on how much talent out in the world there really is. Although they are pretty famous, I wouldn't have known about it if I didn't take this class. Their talent is unbelievable and unique in their own way. Fairey and Banksy both have their ideas of art, and that's what is so interesting. While watching the film, I got an inside on things that I didn't really know. I never realized how many people go beyond and print/create their own print outs, that they then go onto high high building roofs, to print them and show the world. I also never realized how many people would go and track down Banksy's artwork as soon as he posts something about it. It was really interesting to see how many people, even though they know it is illegal, support it every step of the way
