 Stunt doubles:

Unless you are Kate Winslet who loves to do her own stunts, every film with even a little bit of action, will have what is called a stunt double. It is where an actor/actress can't do a needed scene, and so the casting crew bring in people who look almost exactly like the actors/actresses. You normally don't see the face, just the back, and if you do see the face, it's most likely covered by hair or a hat. It's important that the stars of a show or movie don't get hurt, because then it would put off productions and the crew, mainly director and Producers, would lose a lot of money. So they decide to hire people who are able to do the stunts and know what they are doing, without worrying as much of people getting hurt.  They don't get paid nearly as much as the actors do, but for only being in a few scenes, it is quite a lot.

Understudies:

Understudies are also very important when it comes to productions, whether it is films or Stage shows. You see it much more common in stage shows, since it is easier to figure out. In a film/tv show, if an understudy is needed, it will be every obvious that the cast has changed, and it will take you out of the moment. But for a stage show, if there is an actors/actress who is not able to perform, their understudy, who also learns everything- lines, songs, dances, blocking, etc.- Comes in and performs the role. Sometimes, there are multiple understudies, so if one can't do it, then the next in line is able to perform. It is better safe than sorry, when it comes to performances. Especially if it is broadway and one of the leads isn't able to perform, and then the understudy can't, then they will have more options and there won't be so much pressure. And what is cool with understudies, is when they take on the character, they might do one thing different than the other actor/actress would, showing their talent and imagination.
